Under general guidance, the IV A/B social worker performs a case study of an advanced nature dealing with complex individual and family problems; Undertakes extensive treatment plans and advice requiring knowledge and professional training; Performs other related work as assigned.

Social Worker IV A/B requires a master’s degree and experience managing a social work case in a public or private social services agency. This is the highest non-supervisory level in the series. The incumbents perform case work that requires the application of high-level, cutting-edge expertise and technology in social services, generally in areas such as adult and child protection services.

The MQ patterns of SW IV-B mirror those of SW IV-A. The distinguishing difference is that SW IV-B requires an additional year of experience than is required for SW IV-A.

Social worker IV differs from the next higher degree of social worker supervisor 1 in that the latter is supervisory level I. The fourth social factor differs from the third social factor in that the latter does not require a master’s degree and qualifying experience.

The IV A/B social worker receives supervision from a social worker supervisor, supervisor, or other manager at a higher level in accordance with the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) Division of Policies and Procedures (MPP) 31 (31.070). The IV A/B social worker may provide key guidance to social workers or lower-level service personnel.

Minimum qualifications

Social Worker IV A

Mode 1: A master’s degree in social work from an accredited college or university;

or

Mode 2: Master’s degree from an accredited two (2) year consultant program*;

* Eligible counseling certifications from a two (2) year counseling program include: Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Addiction Counseling, Gerontology, Counseling Psychology.

or

Mode 3: One (1) year of full-time experience performing an advanced excursion (equivalent to MSS SW III) Social Work Case Management level as a social worker in a public or private agency and a Master’s degree in Social or Behavioral Sciences, Psychology, Anthropology and Sociology and counseling education.

Social Worker IV B (This level is for candidates with a master’s degree and experience. Experience during training at this level does not count).

Mode 1: A master’s degree in social work from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of full-time experience performing social work case management as a social worker in a public or private agency;

or

Mode 2: A master’s degree from an accredited college or university for a mentorship program of two (2) years* and one (1) year of full-time experience performing social work case management as a social worker in a public or private agency;

* Eligible counseling certifications from a two (2) year counseling program include: Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Addiction Counseling, Gerontology, Counseling Psychology.

or

Mode 3: Two (2) years of full-time experience performing an advanced excursion (equivalent to MSS SW III) level social work case management as a social worker in a public or private agency and a master’s degree in social or behavioral sciences, psychology, anthropology, sociology and education Indicative.

  • Government agencies that access US government information, which includes federal tax information, must ensure that background investigation requirements for all agency employees and contractors with access to federal tax information comply with the IRS background investigation requirements for access to federal tax information. . A background check may be required if the position requires access to these types of records. The background requirements consist of three components that include, fingerprints, citizenship verification and local law enforcement checks. The agencies involved must conduct an investigation during the time of appointment and ensure that a re-investigation is conducted for 10 years from the date of the previous background investigation for each employee with access to federal tax information.
  • Some jobs may require adoption work. In accordance with California regulations Title 22, Section 6, Chapter 9, Subsection 89155, applicants for IV Social Worker and Secondary Social Worker Supervisor positions designated for adoption work must have a master’s degree in social work at the time of application, in order to to be selected for this position.
