Governor Gavin Newsom won the recall election and will remain in office. He said he was humble and grateful for the voters who threw their support behind “everything we Californians value.”
When early returns were released on Tuesday evening, the question of whether to call Newsom back was answered with a resounding “no,” with nearly 70% of early ballots rejecting the move.
As more returns were tallied, Newsom maintained the support of about two-thirds of the electorate. All major broadcasters and news outlets quickly launched the race for less than an hour after polling stations closed.
Newsom, tired of weeks of intense campaigning, spoke to supporters in Sacramento and claimed victory.
“I want to focus on what we as a state said ‘yes’ to,” said Newsom.

“We said yes to science. We said yes to vaccines. We said yes to ending this pandemic. We said yes to people’s right to vote without fear of fraud or voter suppression. We said yes to the constitutional right of women to decide for themselves.” what she does with her body, her fate and her future.
“We said yes to diversity. We said yes to inclusion. … We said yes to all of the things that are important to us as Californians, and I would argue as an American – economic justice, social justice, racial justice, environmental justice. … those things were on the ballot tonight, and so I am grateful to the millions and millions of Californians who exercised their basic right to vote and who expressed themselves so overwhelmingly by rejecting partition, rejecting cynicism. “
He added: “Tonight I am humble, grateful, but determined, in the spirit of my political hero Robert Kennedy, to make the life of this world gentler.”
The dismissal election contained only two questions: Should Newsom be recalled – removed – and, if so, which of the 46 candidates on the ballot, or seven candidates, should replace him?
It took Newsom 50% or more voters to answer “no” to the first question to stay in office. After Newsom quickly and convincingly crossed that mark, the second question was quickly deemed irrelevant.
If things had gone differently, Republican talk show host Larry Elder would have claimed the office of governor. Elder dominated the field of 46 replacement candidates, with Democrat Kevin Paffrath finishing second and Republican former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer third.
Faulconer, who spoke before any results were established, positioned the recall as “a referendum on the failure of Gavin Newsom” and said, “This is why so many Californians not only signed the recall petition, but Californians all over the state, all parties registrations are ready to be changed at the top. “
The Democrats celebrated an early and welcome Newsom victory. Hetty Chang will report for NBC4 News on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.
But he quickly admitted defeat on Tuesday evening.
“It is clear that our work in California is still ongoing,” he told supporters. “This recall has shown that if you focus on Gavin Newsom, he can be defeated … the focus of this election has been turned into national politics and personalities.”
Elder didn’t give in that easily, but he eventually took the stage at his campaign party in Costa Mesa at 10 p.m. and pretended to be defeated.
“Let us be gracious in defeat,” Elder told the crowd. “We may have lost the battle, but we will win the war.”
He again rattled criticism of Newsom’s leadership, pointing to rising crime, rampant homelessness and delayed education.
Another prominent Republican in the race, businessman John Cox, admitted his defeat early but told supporters Tuesday night that the battle for control of the state was not over.
The organizers of the recall say that people have noticed. Beverly White will report for the NBC4 News on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.
“I’m a chartered accountant. I’m a businessman,” he said. “I am appalled by the waste, the corruption and the mismanagement of this state. I still hope I will get a chance to run this government and turn it around. But a message was sent to the majority party. This fight has only just begun. “
President Joe Biden visited Southern California Monday evening to urge voters to decline the recall, referring to Newsom’s record on the coronavirus pandemic, women’s rights, climate change and the minimum wage.
“We need science, we need courage, we need leadership. We need Gavin Newsom, ”said Biden during a 15-minute talk at Long Beach City College.
“A governor who follows science, who has the courage to do the right thing,” added the president
Biden tried to tie supporters of the recall with former President Donald Trump, who was extremely unpopular in California.
“You either keep Gavin Newsom as your governor or you get Donald Trump,” Biden told the crowd of about 1,100, including Senator Alex Padilla, D-California, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Los Angeles District Overseer Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis.
“The choice should be absolutely clear. Gavin Newsom. You have a governor who has the courage to lead.”
Governor Gavin Newsom will remain in office. Conan Nolan will report for NBC4 News on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.
Elder had dismissed the president’s support for the governor.
“If Gavin Newsom thinks that flying in Joe Biden and Kamala Harris – not exactly the most admired government officials right now – makes him look better, that’s all you need to know about how forgetful and distant Newsom is from a big one.” Majority of Californians, “Elder tweeted last week.
During an appearance on Monday morning in Monterey Park, Elder reiterated many of the themes of the recall – criticizing Newsom’s handling of issues such as homelessness, crime and the COVID-19 pandemic, accusing him of “ignoring science” in imposing business and school. . Closings.
Elder also shot back at recall critics who labeled it a “republican” movement.
“There are 2 million people who have signed this petition,” Elder said.
The conservative talk show host spoke from Orange County. Robert Kovacik will report for NBC4 News on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.
“A good quarter to a third of them were the people who only voted for him two years earlier. I am speaking of Independents and Democrats. 63 percent of Hispanics voted for him two years ago. “
Elder is outspoken against government mandates – such as those that require the wearing of masks or receiving COVID vaccines – and vowed to abolish them immediately if elected.
National Democratic Committee chairman Jaime Harrison issued a statement Tuesday evening calling the vote an overwhelming victory for the party’s agenda.
“Once again, voters rejected the Republican Party’s denial of the pandemic that struck our country and its subsequent refusal to deal with it, rejected Republican theories disproved about our elections, and rejected Republicans’ unwavering loyalty to the man, who caused it all – Donald Trump. “Said Harrison.
From afar, Trump had reiterated his waiver of questioning the integrity of the recall election, indicating without evidence that the race had been rigged – just as he had before and after losing his presidential re-election offer to Biden.
In the past few days, Elder took up this issue by posting a link to an online polling fraud reporting website in his campaign and the candidate himself refusing to say whether he would accept the election result.
With the victory, Newsom avoided the fate of former California governor Gray Davis, who was dismissed from office in 2003. He was replaced by the actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Victory celebrations took place across LA County. At the Post and Beam in Baldwin Hills, there were several leaders and lawmakers working hard to get the black voice out.
In her words, the victory was early and very welcome.
“It sends a clear message that the people of this state vigorously oppose the efforts of the forces of Trumpism,” said LA Alderman Mark Ridley-Thomas.
Assembly man Mike Gipson, D-Carson, was thrilled.
He said it was an attempted coup.
“That’s exactly what it was, a coup to take out this governor,” said Gipson, who is also co-chair of AAVREP, the African-American voter registration and participation project.
A leader in the movement to replace Newsom says he’s proud of his team for working 18 months to get the recall on the ballot.
Mike Netter, the co-founder of RecallGavin2020.com, says his political action committee managed to get the dismissal out to voters even if the incumbent governor was not removed.
“People have something to say one way or another,” he said. “Whether Mr. Elder, Mr. Cox, Mr. Kiley, Mr. Faulconer? Nobody is going to solve California’s problems in 15 months.”
Voters said it wasn’t just about the names or subjects on a ballot, but the right to be heard in the first place.
“I have access to voting,” said Maria la Saba. “Not everyone in my community does this. So I have to use my vote to do my part.”
Trell Thomas said he voted because people gave their lives for giving him that opportunity.
“I am voting for my ancestors, family members, my community,” he said.
